Square Enix announced it will hold a Japanese Star Ocean 30th anniversary live stream on YouTube to discuss the series’ next milestone, but that it won’t announce a new game when it does. Instead, it will only go over the history of the titles and details about anniversary plans. This means we could learn about Star Ocean merchandise and events instead. That will air at 4am PT/7am ET/1pm CET/8pm JST on July 19, 2026.
The original Star Ocean first came out on the Super Famicom in Japan on July 19, 1996. However, we didn’t actually see it worldwide until the PSP Star Ocean: The First Departure remake showed up in Japan in 2007 and worldwide in 2008. That game eventually also appeared on the Switch and PS4 in 2019.
While there won’t be a new Star Ocean game brought up at the 30th anniversary event, there will be people who worked on the titles present at the YouTube live stream. Both worked on Star Ocean: The Second Story R. One is Gemdrops CEO Yuchiro Kitao, who is head of the company and served as a director and producer. The other is Kei Komaki, who served as a producer on this and also worked on entries like First Departure R and The Divine Force.
The last mainline game in the series was Star Ocean: The Divine Force. That showed up on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC worldwide in October 2022. We did see the return of Star Ocean: The Second Story again in November 2023 when the remake showed up on the Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC worldwide.
